Composer and Conductor THEO FISCHER

Born in 1926, Theo Fischer is one of Germany's most esteemed conductors and composers. The son of a music teacher and kapellmeister who taught him piano and violin, he was a church organist at age 13. After World War II he continued with the organ and studied at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz. He directed the Catholic church choir "Caecilia" until 1952. After studying abroad he became a free-lance choral and orchestral conductor in 1956. From 1961-86 he was employed as a high school music teacher, and was instrumental in greatly improving school choirs and orchestras. He has been the recipient of many honors (see below), and has travelled widely as a guest conductor and clinician. Now retired, Theo Fischer lives in Münster-Sarmsheim near Bingen/Rhein.

He has composed in a broad range of musical genres for choir and orchestra. He has also appeared as conductor, violin soloist and concert piano accompanist. In his choral writing he is noted for a perfect synthesis between text and music and for a strong melodic line.
