Franz Biebl, musician, as a POW
Biebl was a contributor to the German camp newspaper, Die Brücke (The Bridge). The title presaged his later role as a bridge between American folk music and Germany. This issue contained a picture of Biebl at the piano in rehearsals for Christmas music (below, left), and a two-page article, (below, right, first page only shown) by Franz Biebl, 2nd Company, telling the origins of the Austrian Christmas tradition called "Anklöckln."
The text with the photo says: "We provide the picture opposite in connection with the presentation of the church concert by Franz Biebl tomorrow, Sunday, December 16th. We see at the piano: Franz Biebl, beside him Josef Goss, known through the concert evenings on radio. Franz Biebl is known to us all through the regularly presented chamber music evenings, whose well-chosen programs inceasingly delight even those who never had before the opportunity to hear classical music and get a performance from the chosen pages. (See our program for the church concert on p.16)."
