Within a Manger Harsh With Hay
—Lyrics by Melcena Burns Denny—
(see octavo CQ2622)
Within a manger harsh with hay,
The Holy Child, the Christ Child lay.
Starlight through a broken roof
Gave silver gleam to horn and hoof,
And crowned the infant lying there
With a mystic halo of silvered air.Joseph and Mary, marvelling,
Gazed at the little newborn King.
Shepherds knelt on the earthen floor,
To wonder, worship and adore!Wise men came through winter cold,
With myrrh and frankincense and gold.
They found the new King whom they sought.
And gave the treasures they had brought.Oh, had we lived in Bethlehem,
We might have followed after them,
And given him some pretty thing,
A soft white ball, or baby ring. But Bethlehem is far away,
And long ago that Christmas Day!
Yet ev'ry Christmas gift we make,
We make it for the Christ Child's sake,
And ev'ry loving thing we do,
We do it for our Savior too!
